Course Details

This course is the provincially mandated training required for delivering use of force training to police in British Columbia. It is designed to develop instructional skills in Use of Force instruction, while promoting common best practices for in-service Use of Force training.

Over the course of a blended three weeks (one week online, two in person), the course focuses on the foundational concepts of teaching force options, crisis intervention and de-escalation, effective and defensible training, and ethical practice throughout all aspects of training. Participants increase their skill base through a series of gym activities involving teaching progressively larger groups. Through this design, they are able to reinforce their skill level while building their teaching skills. The Police Academy Recruit Training program is used as a reference point for best practice in physical skills technique. Formal assignments include designing and delivering a teach-back lesson, a simulation scenario, and a panel test. Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) Instructor certification is included in the SUFIC course as a two-day session focused specifically on instructional techniques for CEW users.

The topics of edged weapons, confined spaces, multiple assailants, team tactics, high-risk vehicle stops, containment, slow and deliberate searching, and Immediate Rapid Deployment (IRD) are approached from an advanced user perspective with discussion on how to structure lessons on these topics. Instructional tips and strategies will be provided throughout this training.
